Ever been caught out in the rain? Perhaps you work outdoors, or ride a bike, or maybe you were just ducking down to the shops to get some milk? Have you ever had the washing out on the line when it rained? Maybe you are a storm chaser or just nuts about the weather like us? If so, Rain Alert is the app for you! Simply register a Rain Alert for a location of interest and we will send you an instant message whenever rain is approaching. You could choose your home, work or farm; anywhere which has a postcode.
What is different about this app compared to all those other weather apps? Well, our servers are continually analysing the BOM Rain Radar images and send you an alert when rain is within a close proximity of your registered location.
Rain Alert uses the innovative Apple Push Notification Service (APNS) which means we perform all processing on our servers and importantly we send you a Rain Alert even if you don't have our application open. This ensures that none of your battery life is consumed to check for rain and that you don't miss an alert because you don't have the application open. The one-off price of the App covers all the notifications that you want to receive, we don’t charge extra to deliver alerts. Change your alert location as many times as you want. There are no hidden charges here, just cool technology tailored for you.
You can also browse any of the BOM radars and see an animated loop of radar images, you can even zoom in for a closer look. We also include up to date forecast and observations specific to your registered location. Our goal is to ensure a personal weather experience and therefore we collate information from a number of difference sources to ensure we always display the information that is most relevant for you. Rain Alert is an excellent companion to the other weather apps that you may already use.
Coverage
Rain Alert has coverage for most locations in Australia, including all capital cities and a huge coverage of regional towns. Check our website which has a coverage checker to see if your postcode is covered. Currently Rain Alert does not work for locations outside of Australia.
Configuration
You can configure the frequency of alerts to either: max 1 alert per hour, max 1 alert per 3 hours or max 1 alert per day. Rain Alert has been configured to only send you alerts during daylight hours so you'll only be woken to the rain on the tin roof, not by our alerts.
Rain Alert allows a number of alert options including:
An audio alert
A message based alert
A badge number on the app icon to indicate the rain severity
1 is light rain
2 is medium
3 it's pouring!

Technical Stuff
Alerts are based on real-time analysis of the Bureau of Meteorology radar images. A rain alert indicates that the BOM radars detected an echo in the proximity of your registered alert location. We do noise reduction to limit false positives but it is possible because of a number of weather factors that it may not actually rain at your registered location or that spots of rain may not register an alert. You must have a network connection for Apple to deliver our Alerts to your device, iPod Touch users should be aware that default Apple settings power down your WiFi connection when the device is not in use at which time you won't receive APNS alerts.
